By Aaron Humes: Police in Trinidad and Tobago have uncovered a deeply disturbing scene in a graveyard in Cumuto, where the remains of at least 50 infants and six adults were found dumped. The discovery was made by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), which is now investigating the circumstances surrounding this grave incident, the BBC reports.
The remains were located approximately 25 miles from the capital, Port of Spain. Initial findings suggest that this may be a case of “unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.” As the investigation unfolds, police have not yet established any potential connections to the rampant gang violence that has plagued the country in recent years.
According to the police statement, of the six adults whose remains were found, five were identified through tags. Additionally, two of the adult bodies appeared to have undergone post-mortem examinations. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro expressed deep concern over the situation, calling it “deeply troubling” and emphasizing that anyone or any institution found responsible for this atrocity will face full accountability.
This grim discovery comes in the context of ongoing security challenges in Trinidad and Tobago, which has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America and the Caribbean. A state of emergency that grants police extended powers of search and arrest has been renewed since being implemented on March 2, responding to the alarming crime situation.
The TTPS has urged anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward as the investigation continues into this event.
