By Aaron Humes: Eight children aged between one and 14 years old were killed in a mass shooting this morning, Sunday. The Shreveport Police Department confirmed that the shooting followed a “domestic disturbance” that unfolded across multiple residences in the area, the UK Independent reports.

According to police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon, some of the young victims were reportedly related to the suspect, who was shot and killed by law enforcement during a subsequent chase. The incident, which left a total of 10 people shot, took place in at least three locations. This shooting marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years, according to the Associated Press.

Police reported that the gunman fled the scene in a stolen vehicle after the attack. Following a police pursuit in neighboring Bossier City, officers engaged the suspect, resulting in his death.

“This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux stated. “It’s a terrible morning in Shreveport.” A “taken aback” Police Chief Wayne Smith echoed these sentiments: “My heart goes out to this entire community for the tragic event that has taken place this morning… I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur.” He said the crime scene was an “extensive scene unlike anything most of us have ever seen.”.

Among the two surviving victims were two women, both believed to have suffered gunshot wounds to the head. One of the women is thought to have been in a relationship with the shooter. Reports indicate that one of them managed to escape to a neighbor’s home after being shot.

As investigators continue to gather details, Bordelon declined to disclose the identities of the suspect and victims, pending notifications to their families.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a native of Shreveport, released a statement extending thoughts and prayers to the victims and the local community. He described the incident as a domestic issue that escalated into a tragic shooting.

Members of the Shreveport City Council visited the scene on Sunday afternoon, where they held a public prayer session for the victims and their families. City Council chair Tabatha Taylor remarked on the bright futures tragically cut short for the children: “This is the result when someone snaps,” Taylor said. “So, I’m going to ask the community, along with prayer, with every mental health consultant that is out there — this family and this community needs you.”
