Belize’s world class attractions deserve world class management

By Horace Palacio: Belize is blessed with some of the most breathtaking natural and historical attractions in the world.

The ATM Cave stands at the very top of that list. It is not just a tourist site. It is an experience. A journey into history, culture, and nature that very few places on earth can offer.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit and explore it ourselves.

And while the cave itself remains incredible, the experience surrounding it tells a different story.

One that Belize can no longer ignore.

Getting to one of the country’s premier attractions should not feel like a test of endurance. The road leading to the site is in poor condition. Rough, uneven, and neglected. It sends the wrong message before visitors even arrive.

Then there are the facilities.

The bathrooms are not what you would expect for a destination of this caliber. They are poorly maintained, dirty, and in some cases unusable. For a country that depends heavily on tourism, this is unacceptable.

What makes it worse is the timing.

The government has recently increased the entrance fees to access this site. Naturally, that creates an expectation. Visitors assume that higher fees will lead to better infrastructure, cleaner facilities, and an overall improved experience.

But that is not what is happening.

Instead, Belize is charging more while delivering less.

This is not just an ATM Cave issue. It reflects a broader problem in how Belize manages its tourism assets.

Look at what is happening at Rio On Pools in Mountain Pine Ridge. Reports and images show dirty toilets, garbage scattered around, and facilities that are clearly not being maintained. Tour guides themselves have expressed embarrassment when visitors ask to use these restrooms.

That should never happen in a country that prides itself on tourism.

These are not small issues.

They directly affect the visitor experience.

Tourism is not just about the attraction itself. It is about the entire journey. The road, the cleanliness, the organization, the professionalism. Every detail matters.

When those details are ignored, the country’s reputation suffers.

And in today’s world, reputation spreads fast. One bad experience can reach thousands of potential visitors online.

Economically, this matters. Tourism is one of Belize’s main sources of income. It brings in foreign exchange, supports jobs, and drives local businesses.

When the experience declines, the entire economy feels it.

This is not complicated.

If you increase fees, you must increase value.

That means investing in infrastructure. Fixing roads. Maintaining clean, functional bathrooms. Ensuring that sites are managed to international standards.

Other countries understand this. They treat their top attractions as national assets that must be protected and enhanced. They reinvest revenue into maintenance and improvement.

Belize must do the same.

There is also a shared responsibility. Visitors must respect these spaces. Littering and misuse contribute to the problem. But management cannot hide behind that excuse.

Proper systems, regular maintenance, and accountability are what keep facilities in good condition.

At the end of the day, Belize is competing in a global tourism market. Visitors have options. They can go to Costa Rica, Mexico, or countless other destinations that offer similar experiences with better infrastructure.

Belize cannot rely solely on its natural beauty.

It must match that beauty with quality.

The ATM Cave is world class.

The experience getting there should be too.

Until Belize understands that, it will continue to underperform in an industry where it should be leading.
