By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan showcased its sea defenses Thursday amid rising tensions with China, highlighting its Kuang Hua VI fast attack missile boats and Tuo Chiang-class corvettes, AP reports.
The demonstration, near Taiwan’s largest port of Kaohsiung, is part of Taiwan’s strategy to deter a Chinese invasion.
The Kuang Hua VI boats, armed with indigenously developed Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles, are designed to intercept enemy ships within Taiwan’s 44-kilometer contiguous zone.
Taiwan has regularly responded to Chinese military provocations, including naval and air incursions, by scrambling jets and deploying warships.
Taiwan’s defense strategy focuses on countering China’s larger military with agile, flexible forces. The Tuo Chiang-class corvette, known for its speed and stealth, is seen as a formidable asset against larger Chinese ships.
While Taiwan’s defense capabilities have been bolstered by domestic development, it still relies heavily on U.S. technology, with the U.S. pledging to assist in the event of conflict.
Taiwan’s Navy emphasized its readiness to defend the island with asymmetric warfare tactics.
