By Zoila Palma: Young people across Europe are increasingly taking to the streets to protest rising living costs, unaffordable housing, poor wages and uncertainty about their future, as demonstrations spread across France, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Germany.
The protests, which brought hundreds of thousands of people into the streets over the weekend, reflect growing frustration with traditional institutions and concerns about economic and social inequalities, AFP reports.
Students have emerged at the forefront of the demonstrations, with the movement gaining momentum after French high school students began protesting in mid-September, demanding improved school facilities and reforms to the university admissions system. France became a catalyst for wider demonstrations, with at least 550,000 people participating in protests on October 17.
Similar demonstrations later spread to Greece, where more than 10,000 people rallied across several cities, highlighting concerns shared by young people throughout the continent.
Housing affordability has become one of the central issues driving the protests, particularly in countries such as Spain, Portugal and Greece, where rising rents are placing additional pressure on young people.
