By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo XIV urged Spaniards to reject division and work toward greater unity as he began a weeklong visit to Spain, the first papal visit to the country in 15 years.
Arriving in Madrid, the American-born pope was welcomed by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia and used his opening address to call on citizens and political leaders to move beyond growing political and social polarization.
Pope Leo warned against efforts to gain support by “fanning the flames of polarization.” He said human dignity continues to be violated and encouraged leaders to invest in educating young people to appreciate diversity and complexity rather than embracing simplistic and divisive narratives. The pontiff also highlighted Spain’s historical role as a center of dialogue between cultures, religions and languages.
The pope’s visit comes at a time when Spain is experiencing sharp divisions over issues such as immigration, feminism and political corruption. The country’s Socialist-led government has faced criticism from opposition parties, including the Popular Party and Vox, which have called on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to step down ahead of the 2027 elections. Immigration policy has also become a major source of debate across the country.
One of the most anticipated moments of the visit will be Pope Leo’s address to both chambers of the Spanish Parliament on Monday, marking the first time a pope has spoken before the legislature. The speech is expected to take place before a deeply polarized political environment and could become one of the defining moments of his papacy.
