By Zoila Palma:  Peru’s government has declared a 60-day state of emergency across nearly three-quarters of the country’s districts as authorities prepare for severe rainfall, flooding and landslides linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The measure affects provinces across all 25 administrative regions, Yahoo reports.

According to a decree published in the country’s official gazette, President Keiko Fujimori’s administration said regional governments lack the capacity to respond adequately to the impending threats and require technical and operational support from national agencies.

During the emergency period, local and regional authorities are expected to implement immediate risk-reduction measures, emergency response and recovery operations.

Peru is facing contrasting weather conditions in its southern highlands and Amazon region, where more than 700 Andean districts are under water scarcity emergencies due to prolonged moisture shortages.
