By Zoila Palma:  Protests by French high school students resumed on Monday, but on a significantly smaller scale than in previous weeks, as students returned from a two-week school break, Reuters report.

Attempts to blockade several schools were reported in Paris, Marseille and Rennes, with the Education Ministry confirming that 41 high schools, representing about 1% nationwide, were blocked by 8:30 a.m. GMT.

Before the break, hundreds of schools across France had been affected by demonstrations that began in the Paris suburbs in September.

The protests have expanded beyond education-related concerns to include the rising cost of living and broader social grievances, attracting trade unionists and activists. Some demonstrations have also turned violent, resulting in clashes with police, looting and riots in several cities.

Students are demanding renovations to aging school facilities, more teachers, additional university places and reforms to the university admissions system, which they consider socially unfair.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray said Monday that the latest blockade attempts were limited, stressing that while protests are permitted, preventing students and staff from accessing schools is illegal.
