International News: UN report warns of major funding shortfall for climate change adaptation

By Zoila Palma:  Developed countries are falling significantly short of the funding needed to help developing nations adapt to climate change, despite increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events.

A United Nations report released today estimates that developing countries require approximately $305 billion annually to strengthen their resilience against climate-related threats.

According to the UN’s 2026 Adaptation Gap Report, funding from developed countries increased by just $1 billion to $28.2 billion in 2024, representing only a small fraction of the estimated amount needed. Developing nations continue to face growing risks from heatwaves, droughts, wildfires and flooding, increasing the urgency for investments in climate adaptation.

The funding gap is expected to become even wider, with adaptation financing needs projected to reach $420 billion annually by 2035. Although an agreement reached at last year’s climate negotiations in Brazil aims to triple adaptation financing to $120 billion annually by 2035, the report warns that this would still leave more than two-thirds of the required funding unmet.

UN Environment Programme Executive Director Inger Andersen cautioned that the world is not adequately prepared for current climate conditions, much less the consequences of global warming exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius.
