By Zoila Palma: Mexican avocado producers have destroyed as much as 52 tons of avocados after authorities confirmed the presence of avocado seed weevil larvae in large volumes of produce intended for international export, Reuters report.
The discovery was made in Michoacán, Mexico’s leading avocado-producing state, prompting authorities to detain shipments and order the destruction of potentially contaminated crops to prevent the pest from spreading.
Producers from the avocado-producing states of Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit reportedly destroyed the produce over the weekend.
Mexico’s National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) supported the disposal process, which involved emptying truckloads of avocados into designated pits for burning and burial in accordance with pest-control protocols.
Michoacán Environment Minister Alejandro Méndez confirmed the presence of the pest confirming that producers were taking action to prevent their crops from becoming infested.
The avocado seed weevil can bore into the branches and trunks of avocado trees, as well as into the seeds inside the fruit, causing significant damage. The pest can spread rapidly throughout orchards and potentially devastate crops if left uncontrolled. Méndez stressed that the avocados suspected of contamination had not entered the market.
Mexico is the world’s leading producer and exporter of avocados, with Michoacán serving as a major production hub and an important supplier to the United States market.
