By Breaking Belize News Staff: Minister of National Security, Energy and Ports Michel Chebat has announced plans for a new Second Chance Programme targeting young people between the ages of 15 and 23 as part of the government’s response to escalating gang violence.

Speaking during Sunday’s emergency police briefing, Chebat said the initiative would provide opportunities for vulnerable youths to escape criminal activity and pursue productive alternatives.

The programme will involve collaboration with several government ministries, including those responsible for human development, sports, agriculture, labour, fisheries and natural resources.

Churches, nongovernmental organizations and private businesses are also expected to participate.

Chebat explained that the government recognizes the need for meaningful intervention and mediation programmes, particularly for young people who are vulnerable to recruitment by gangs.

The minister emphasized that stronger law enforcement measures must be accompanied by opportunities for rehabilitation, training and employment.

He said the objective is to prevent young people from becoming involved in criminal activity while providing assistance to those seeking to change their lives.

The announcement comes as the government reassesses existing intervention programmes, including the Leadership Intervention Unit.

Further details about the Second Chance Programme’s implementation and funding have not yet been announced.
