By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico blocked a U.S. military plane from landing on Thursday, temporarily halting deportations to the country, NBC reports.
U.S. defense sources said the plane, part of a broader deportation effort, never took off, while two flights carrying Guatemalan nationals successfully departed.
The reason for the block was unclear, but tensions have risen between the U.S. and Mexico since President Trump’s election, with Trump threatening tariffs over migration issues.
The White House later referred to the incident as an “administrative issue” and said it had been resolved.
Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the country’s cooperation with the U.S. on migration while asserting its sovereignty.
Despite this, Mexico reiterated its opposition to unilateral immigration policies, like the “remain in Mexico” policy, which would require migrants to stay in Mexico while awaiting asylum hearings.
Meanwhile, Guatemala received three U.S. deportation flights carrying a total of about 265 Guatemalan nationals.
