By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize has taken another important step toward strengthening public safety and environmental protection through a collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The Department of the Environment (DOE), with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recently hosted an expert mission from the IAEA aimed at improving the safe management and storage of radioactive materials across the country.
The four-day visit, held from June 1 to June 4, forms part of Belize’s commitment under the Radiation Safety and Security Act, 2020, and international standards governing the safe use and storage of radioactive sources.
While many Belizeans may associate radioactive materials with nuclear power plants, Belize uses radioactive technology for peaceful and beneficial purposes in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture and construction.
The challenge comes when radioactive equipment reaches the end of its useful life and must be safely stored and managed to prevent risks to people and the environment.
During the visit, IAEA experts and DOE-certified personnel traveled to facilities across Belize that possess disused sealed radioactive sources. The team evaluated existing storage arrangements and provided recommendations designed to improve both short-term and long-term safety measures.
Officials say the initiative will help Belize continue protecting public health while ensuring the responsible use of important technologies that support national development.
