By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Shein has stated that it does not allow Chinese cotton in products sold in the U.S., its largest market, to comply with the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, Reuters report.
The company’s general counsel, Yinan Zhu, told UK lawmakers that Shein requires its manufacturers to source cotton from approved regions, such as Australia, Brazil, India, and the U.S., but does not include China.
The fast-fashion retailer has faced allegations of using cotton from China’s Xinjiang province, where forced labor and human rights abuses are reported against Uyghur Muslims.
While Shein denies these claims, its cotton sourcing policy only applies to the U.S. market, and it has not clarified its stance for products sold in other regions, like the UK.
Labour lawmaker Liam Byrne, who is leading a UK parliamentary inquiry into labor practices, called for more transparency, particularly regarding the use of Xinjiang cotton in products sold in the UK.
Shein has employed isotopic testing to verify cotton sources, revealing 1.3% of its cotton came from unapproved regions in 2024.
Byrne has also raised concerns with UK regulators about ensuring safeguards against forced labor in the upcoming Shein IPO, which the company plans to list on the London Stock Exchange.
