By Zoila Palma: Infamous Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” was buried in a golden coffin by his family on Monday following his death after a firefight with Mexican special forces in late February.
The 59-year-old founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) had been Mexico’s most-wanted criminal, while U.S. authorities had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture.
His death sparked retaliatory violence across Mexico, with cartel members burning vehicles and blockading roads in at least 20 states.
Security forces, including members of the National Guard, were heavily deployed near Guadalajara in Jalisco state during the funeral to prevent further unrest in the region considered a stronghold of the cartel.
Large and colorful floral tributes were delivered to the funeral home ahead of the ceremony, including a rooster-shaped arrangement referencing Oseguera’s love of cockfighting.
According to reports, 5 lorries were needed to transport the many tributes to the cemetery, most of which were sent anonymously.
The funeral procession included a band playing ranchero music and narcocorridos, songs that often glorify drug lords.
The coffin was carried into a chapel at the cemetery as the traditional song “El Muchacho Alegre” played.
