By Zoila Palma: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has announced a large-scale military mobilization along the country’s western and coastal areas, citing efforts to combat drug trafficking, Yahoo reports.
Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino said 25,000 troops have been deployed to border states Táchira and Zulia, with operations targeting illegal coca cultivation in the Sierra de Perijá and patrolling rivers in Apure to disrupt smuggling routes.
The military is reportedly equipped with river patrol units, naval assets, drones, and other tactical resources.
The move comes amid escalating tensions with the United States, which has accused Maduro and his top officials of running a state-linked drug network known as the “Cartel of the Suns.”
In response, Washington has deployed 8 warships, F-35 jets, and 4,500 personnel to the Caribbean in what it describes as a crackdown on narcotics trafficking. Recent incidents, including U.S. forces intercepting a Venezuelan drug-laden boat and Venezuelan jets approaching U.S. naval vessels, have further heightened regional unease.
Despite the U.S. accusations and military pressure, Maduro has rejected claims of involvement in drug trafficking, calling them “fabricated” attempts at regime change.
Padrino emphasized that the troop deployments are strictly aimed at targeting traffickers while reinforcing strategic coastal locations.
