By Zoila Palma: A British-born teenager, Carlo Acutis, who died in 2006 at the age of 15, was declared the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint on Sunday, Telegraph reports.
Acutis, known for using his computer skills to create websites documenting Eucharistic miracles, was canonised during an open-air Mass in St. Peter’s Square, where Pope Leo officially proclaimed him and Italian youth Pier Giorgio Frassati as saints.
The canonisation, one of the most widely attended events of this year’s Jubilee, drew thousands of pilgrims and young people, with banners of Acutis’s curly-haired image waving across Vatican City.
Nicknamed “God’s Influencer,” the teenager gained international recognition for spreading the gospel online before his death from leukemia. Pope Leo described him as an inspiration for today’s youth, urging them to “direct their lives upwards and make them masterpieces.”
Born in London in 1991 to Italian parents, Acutis was raised in Milan, where he lived a typical teenage life of soccer, school, and computer coding, but also nurtured a deep devotion to the Catholic faith. Millions have since visited his tomb in Assisi, where he is entombed in casual clothes with a rosary in hand.
His canonisation marks a milestone for the modern church, showcasing how faith and technology can unite in contemporary forms of evangelisation.
