By Zoila Palma: Democrat Gina Hinojosa has defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott in a stunning upset in Texas, ending his bid for a fourth term and marking a major political shift in a state that has not had a Democratic governor this century.
Hinojosa’s victory is among the most significant Democratic gains in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, The Texas Tribune noted.
Hinojosa, a fifth-term state representative from Austin, campaigned on improving public education, addressing affordability concerns and reducing the influence of wealthy individuals and corporations in state government.
Despite being outspent by more than four to one, she gained momentum in the final months of the campaign as voter dissatisfaction and a competitive Senate race helped strengthen Democratic prospects.
In her victory speech, Hinojosa celebrated the result as a breakthrough for her campaign and its supporters, declaring that they had “shocked the world.” She also pledged to work across party lines, emphasizing that her victory should not lead to another period of single-party rule.
At 52, Hinojosa will become Texas’ first Latina governor.
Abbott conceded the race at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday, congratulating Hinojosa by telephone and thanking supporters for their backing throughout his political career.
During his 12 years as governor, he oversaw significant economic and population growth while advancing policies on immigration, school choice, abortion restrictions and property taxes. His campaign had emphasized economic growth and tax relief, while attacking Hinojosa’s policies as too liberal for the traditionally conservative state.
Hinojosa’s victory is expected to reshape Texas politics, particularly in education and state government oversight.
