By Zoila Palma:  El Salvador’s state of exception has been extended for the 51st time, with the latest 30-day measure taking effect Sunday, May 31, and remaining in force through June 29, Tico Times report.

The extension comes as President Nayib Bukele prepares to deliver his annual report to the nation today.

The Legislative Assembly, dominated by Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party, approved the renewal during its 111th plenary session by a 57-1 vote, with the VAMOS party casting the lone dissenting vote. The decree continues the suspension of three constitutional guarantees involving the right to defense, limits on administrative detention and the privacy of communications.

The state of exception has remained in effect since March 2022 following a spike in gang-related killings. According to the investigative outlet El Faro, the violence followed an alleged breakdown in an arrangement between the government and gangs. Each extension has been requested by the Council of Ministers and later ratified by lawmakers.

Official figures presented during the plenary session indicate that more than 92,300 people have been detained since the measure began, all accused of gang membership or collaboration.

The government has acknowledged that at least 8,000 detainees were innocent but maintains that the policy has sharply reduced violence.

Authorities reported that El Salvador ended 2025 with 82 homicides and a rate of 1.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, which officials describe as the lowest in the country’s history.
