By Zoila Palma: The United States carried out airstrikes on Iranian military sites after Tehran shot down an American MQ-1 Predator drone over the weekend, the U.S. military said today.
Iran acknowledged launching a retaliatory attack, while Kuwait reported intercepting incoming drone and missile fire amid escalating regional tensions, NPR reports.
According to U.S. Central Command, the strikes took place Saturday and Sunday near the city of Geruk and on Qeshm Island. The military said the operation targeted Iranian radar systems, drone control facilities and air defenses in response to what it described as aggressive Iranian actions, including the destruction of the American drone operating over international waters. U.S. officials said no American troops were injured.
Central Command said U.S. fighter aircraft destroyed Iranian air defenses, a ground control station and two one-way attack drones that posed threats to vessels moving through regional waters. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, meanwhile, said U.S. forces had struck a telecommunications tower and confirmed it carried out a retaliatory attack, though it did not specify the location.
Kuwait announced that its air defense systems were activated early today to intercept incoming drones and missiles.
Iranian state television later aired footage of a ballistic missile launch featuring imagery directed at U.S. President Donald Trump and referencing the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks come as Iran continues to maintain restrictions on the strategic waterway, disrupting global energy supplies and affecting the movement of oil, natural gas and chemical fertilizers.
