International News: Could Bukele be the answer to Haiti’s gang crisis?

By Zoila Palma:  El Salvador has deployed more than 2,000 military personnel to Haiti in an unprecedented overseas operation aimed at helping combat escalating gang violence, raising questions about whether Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele could play a decisive role in restoring security to the troubled Caribbean nation.

The deployment follows the abduction of four Salvadoran soldiers who were serving as part of an international security force in Haiti.

Bukele has previously offered to help Haiti address its security crisis, declaring in March 2024 that his government could fix the situation.

The Salvadoran president has gained international recognition for his aggressive crackdown on criminal gangs, which involved the detention of more than 80,000 suspected gang members. However, his approach has also drawn criticism over alleged human rights violations and restrictions on civil liberties.

In a recent statement on social media, Bukele warned that his government would teach Haitian gangs a lesson.

Haiti’s government has welcomed El Salvador’s military assistance, expressing its solidarity with the Salvadoran personnel and reaffirming its commitment to working with international partners to restore stability.

The deployment comes as the existing United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force struggles to meet its target of 5,500 personnel, with approximately 2,000 troops currently on the ground.

Gang groups continue to control significant portions of the capital, Port-au-Prince, while violence has claimed more than 5,000 lives this year and at least 22,000 people since the country’s crisis intensified.
