By Zoila Palma: Transport CEO Chester Williams explains that National Bus Company was created to upgrade and enhance commuters experience.
“For far to long our Belizean people, particularly the commuters have been subjected to inferior public transportation. The buses owned and operated by most of the bus operators are dilapidated, constantly breaking down, passengers getting wet during rainy weather and are mechanically unreliable.
Due to this, the government of Belize through the Ministry of Transportation moved to establish the National Bus Company. This company was created after numerous consultations with the bus operators, other stakeholders and international organizations. After careful consideration a number of the operators came together which gave birth to the NBC. The Government of Belize joined the operators as the majority shareholder in NBC making it a public, private partnership,” Williams explained.
Williams further said that NBC was not created to run the other operators out of business.
“It was created with the view of provide adequate, reliable, affordable and comfortable transportation service to our commuting public. In order to fulfill its mandate the government and people of Taiwan will be giving a grant of 24 new electric buses and solar charging stations to the Government of Belize. These modern buses are the first step in modernizing the Belize Public Transportation System. It is the firm belief of this government that our commuting public deserve a transportation system that do not strip them of their human dignity,” he added.
The Transport CEO says that opportunities were given to bus operators to fix the transportation system but the government decided to step in partnering with some operators to improving the system.
He added that for more than 20 years, the system was broken and it further deteriorated with no hope until this plan came about.
“This new transportation system will not only benefit our commuters it will benefit us as a country. We will now be on par with our brothers and sisters in the region.
Let us push aside the obstructionist and move full speed ahead in created a modern, reliable, affordable and comfortable transportation system for our people, one that we can all be proud of and one that we all will feel comfortable riding one day,” he urged.
