By Zoila Palma: Thousands of people took to the streets across Europe on Saturday, October 31, protesting the rising cost of living, inadequate public services and government policies.
Demonstrations were reported in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Portugal, as a wave of youth-led activism spread across the continent, NBC reports.
Authorities remained on high alert following recent protests that resulted in looting, property damage and clashes with police.
France experienced some of the largest demonstrations, with the Interior Ministry reporting approximately 320,000 protesters nationwide, including 70,000 in Paris.
The government deployed 70,000 police officers to manage the demonstrations after weeks of unrest initially sparked by student concerns over the education system and later expanded to include demands for improved living conditions and social security. More than 560 arrests were reported by Saturday night, while authorities said some protests remained peaceful and others resulted in fires and clashes.
In Germany, the campaign group Gen Z regelt, meaning “Gen Z takes charge,” organized demonstrations in more than 30 cities, including Berlin and Frankfurt. Protesters called for greater investment in education, housing and climate protection while opposing plans to reintroduce mandatory military service.
However, some demonstrations turned violent, with police reporting smashed storefronts, looting and attacks involving stones, bottles and Molotov cocktails in Frankfurt. Protests were also reported in Madrid, Lisbon and Brussels, where police used tear gas and water cannons against some demonstrators.
The demonstrations reflect growing frustration among younger generations and other citizens over economic pressures and government priorities.
