By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: American Airlines has indefinitely suspended its daily flights from Miami to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, initially set to resume on February 12.
The airline will assess the possibility of resuming service in late 2025, CBS reports.
This decision follows the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) 30-day flight ban after gangs shot at planes in Haitian airspace.
The United Nations also temporarily halted flights to Haiti, impacting the delivery of humanitarian aid.
In a statement, American Airlines expressed regret, citing its 50-year commitment to Haiti, and offered full refunds to affected customers.
Other U.S. carriers, including JetBlue and Spirit Airlines, also suspended flights after their planes were hit by gunfire in November.
The ongoing flight restrictions have caused significant hardships for Haitians, as gangs control access to major roads and mudslides have blocked key routes. The only functioning international airport in the country is in Cap-Haïtien, with limited flights to the U.S. currently operated by Sunrise Airways.
Despite the turmoil, the U.S. continues deporting Haitians, with a recent flight carrying 70 deportees arriving in Cap-Haïtien amid severe flooding and road closures.
