By Zoila Palma: Belize has made history after capturing its first-ever senior men’s gold medal at the III AFECAVOL Men’s Final Four Championship in San José, Costa Rica.
The national volleyball team defeated host Costa Rica 3-1 in the championship match, winning by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-21 to secure the country’s first men’s title at the regional senior level.
The landmark victory also earned Belize qualification for next year’s NORCECA Pan American Cup, marking another major milestone for the country’s volleyball programme. The championship was held from July 12 to 15 and featured Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua.
Belize’s success was further highlighted by outstanding individual performances.
Francis Hauze was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and also received the award for Second Best Attacker, while Kyron Sutherland was recognized as the Best Blocker. Their performances played a key role in Belize’s historic championship run.
The tournament concluded with Belize taking the gold medal, Costa Rica finishing with silver, Panama earning bronze and Nicaragua placing fourth.
Congratulations have poured in for the players, coaches and support staff, whose determination and teamwork delivered a historic achievement that has made Belize proud.
