By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed hope on Thursday that Mexico can reach a deal with President-elect Donald Trump to limit the number of third-country deportees it receives from the U.S.
Currently, Mexico has an agreement with the Biden administration to deport individuals directly to their country of origin.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico’s priority is to repatriate Mexicans, not non-Mexican deportees, CNN reports.
Sheinbaum announced plans to meet with governors from Mexican border states to prepare for potential mass deportations, stating, “We will be ready to receive them.”
This comes after a call with Trump, during which both leaders discussed border security and the fentanyl crisis. Trump claimed Sheinbaum agreed to stop migration through Mexico, though Sheinbaum denied proposing to close the U.S.-Mexico border.
Meanwhile, Mexico has ramped up efforts to address the fentanyl trade, including a significant drug bust in Sinaloa.
The U.S. border has seen increasing numbers of migrants from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba, and beyond, as Mexico faces pressure to manage the flow of migrants heading toward the U.S.
In response, Panama’s foreign ministry stated it would not accept third-country deportees from the U.S., reaffirming its stance on international law.
