The Hummingbird Highway has been temporarily closed to all vehicular traffic at Mile 17.5, after a sinkhole opened up in the road and prompted emergency action from officials.
In a press release issued today, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing advised the public of the closure, explaining that the roadway sinkhole requires immediate emergency repairs. The development follows reports earlier in the day of a hole in the road near the area of Billy Barquedier National Park.
According to the Ministry, an initial engineering assessment carried out by its technical personnel found that the underlying corrugated metal culvert remains structurally intact and functional. The damage, it said, is confined mainly to the pavement structure and the embankment material above the culvert, which led to a localized collapse of the road surface.
In the interest of public safety, the affected section of the highway has been closed while emergency stabilization and repair works are carried out. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and to use alternative routes where available. The Ministry is also reminding the public to comply with all traffic control measures and to follow instructions from personnel on site.
The Ministry acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may cause and assured the public that every effort is being made to speed up the repairs while maintaining the highest standards of safety. It said further updates, including notice of when the highway will reopen to traffic, will be shared as more information becomes available.
The Ministry thanked the public for its patience, understanding and cooperation during the emergency response.
