By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 53-year-old homeless man who was fined just two weeks ago for carrying a knife is back in trouble with the law after admitting to stealing more than $2,400 worth of items from a parked vehicle in Belize City. However, despite being spared a prison sentence for the latest theft, he ended up behind bars because he could not pay an outstanding $105 court fine.
Denroy Ingram appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate on Friday, October 30, where he pleaded guilty to stealing items valued at $2,425 from a blue Chevrolet Equinox belonging to 27-year-old Armando Reyes.
The stolen items included a pair of Nike tennis shoes valued at $200, five bottles of syrup valued at $125, a gold ring and gold chain valued at $1,000 each, and a pocket knife valued at $100.
According to police, officers conducting mobile patrols along Craig Street around 2:58 a.m. on October 29 noticed the parked vehicle with its door open and encountered Ingram nearby.
The vehicle’s owner was alerted and subsequently discovered that several personal belongings were missing. None of the stolen items were recovered.
When questioned in court about what happened to the property, Ingram claimed he had not received the other items but admitted selling the Nike shoes and spending the money.
Although Ingram had two previous theft convictions dating back to 2018, the Senior Magistrate opted against imposing an immediate custodial sentence.
Instead, he was fined $800 plus $5 in court costs and given until January 29, 2027, to pay, or face four months in prison.
However, Ingram still owed $105 from an earlier drug possession conviction. Unable to settle that outstanding fine, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison to serve two months in default.
The latest conviction comes just over two weeks after Breaking Belize News reported that Ingram was fined $155 for possessing a knife he claimed he used to scrape fish.
In that October 14 appearance, Ingram pleaded guilty after police found him carrying a three-inch kitchen knife near the intersection of George and Orange Streets. He was given until December 11 to pay the fine.
Ingram’s history of theft convictions also dates back several years. In June 2018, he was convicted of stealing $22.80 worth of clothing from a store on Albert Street and was fined $200.
With his latest conviction, Ingram now faces another financial penalty while serving time for an older unpaid fine.
