By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize City resident Richard Bennett, who was acquitted of a double murder in 2024, is preparing to stand trial in January 2027 for allegedly burglarizing a tour guide’s home and stealing more than $2,000 worth of belongings.

Bennett, who remains incarcerated in connection with a separate criminal matter, appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #3 last week, where he was provided with 20 pages of disclosure and a CD containing evidence the prosecution intends to use against him.

The Magistrate instructed Bennett to carefully review the documents and watch the video footage, which police allege captured him committing the burglary.

Bennett maintained his not guilty plea, and his trial was scheduled to begin on January 11, 2027.

As previously reported by Breaking Belize News, Bennett was charged in September following an August 26 burglary at the Logwood Street home of tour guide Cecil Gill.

Police allege that Bennett entered the residence through a bathroom window after breaking three glass louvers and stole a 32-inch Samsung Smart television valued at $750, a crystal bottle containing $1,000 in coins, and a pair of loafer shoes valued at $260.

An eyewitness reportedly told investigators that she saw Bennett carrying a television concealed in a plastic bag before hiding it nearby and subsequently returning to retrieve it.

Bennett was initially granted bail of $2,000 but is currently behind bars following a separate charge of threat of death involving his sister.

Bennett previously faced a much more serious criminal case involving a double murder committed in 2021.

In April 2024, BBN reported that Bennett was acquitted of the double murder charges after the High Court upheld a no-case submission by the defence, ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish a sufficient case for him to answer.

His latest burglary case is scheduled to proceed to trial on January 11, 2027, at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
