He was an honor roll student who wanted to join the Coast Guard and Sunday a gunman took everything from him

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): There are no words that make this make sense. Rackeem Armstrong was fifteen years old on Sunday night when a gunman opened fire on a group of family members gathered outside a home in Gardenia Village and took his life over what police believe was a dispute about a motorcycle.

A motorcycle.

Rackeem was not involved in any dispute. He was not the kind of child who caused trouble. His principal had only good things to say about him. His community knew him as a good kid. He was an honor roll student who loved football and singing and spent his days going between school and home like fifteen year olds are supposed to do.

He had dreams. Real ones. He wanted to join the Coast Guard. He talked about building his own home. Getting married. Growing up. His father was pushing him toward those goals and Rackeem was running toward them.

Sunday night a gunman who apparently had a dispute with someone in that group showed up and opened fire. Rackeem fell. His eighteen year old cousin Justin Young fell beside him shot in the spine. Young was supposed to start job training at BATSUB yesterday morning. Instead he woke up in a hospital bed praying he will ever walk again.

Justin’s mother Kayla Young was there and watched it all unfold on Sunday night.

“I still can’t believe that it happened,” she said.

Neither can anyone else.

Rackeem’s family had been planning his birthday party and his sister’s graduation. After Sunday night they started planning his funeral instead.

He was fifteen years old. He deserved every single one of the years he never got.

Rest in peace Rackeem Armstrong.
