By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): There were many voices at Monday night’s justice rally for Dr. Naum Bonilla in Belmopan. But none stopped the crowd the way his wife’s did.
Maria Bonilla stood before her community, gathering every ounce of strength she had to speak about the man she loved and the injustice of how he was taken.
Her words were not rehearsed. They were raw. And they were among the most emotional moments of the evening.
“This is something that has been really hard. What I just think and it makes me feel bad is that he took most of his life studying. He spent 14 years in this career in medicine and he just practiced almost 7 years. He was just starting.”
She spoke of the lives Dr. Bonilla touched and the patients who have approached her since his death to share their stories.
“I know there’s a lot of people that he’s helped. I have met a lot of people that tell me, ‘I am alive because of Dr. Bonilla.’”
Then came the words that captured the pain felt by family, friends, and supporters gathered at the rally.
“I can’t believe how this person came and take out his life that way, so I just ask for justice and I think that we will get who did that to him.”
Area Representative Oscar Mira also addressed the rally, joining calls for justice in the case.
Fourteen years of study. Seven years of service. Countless lives touched. And a wife standing before hundreds in Belmopan demanding justice for the husband she lost far too soon.
Belize heard her Monday night.
