By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City mother accused of aggravated assault with a knife and several offenses against police officers was granted bail on Wednesday, despite telling the court that she preferred to go to prison for two weeks.
Anacelia Joycelin Castillo, 44, of a West Street address in Belize City, appeared before Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #7, where she was read five criminal charges.
Castillo was charged with aggravated assault upon a woman, resisting lawful arrest, aggravated assault upon a police officer, wounding upon a police officer, and using insulting words toward an officer.
Police allege that the aggravated assault with a deadly instrument, namely a knife, occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, on Dean Street in Belize City. The remaining charges reportedly arose when police went to detain Castillo at her West Street residence.
Castillo pleaded not guilty to all charges. During her arraignment, she told the court that she had been beaten while being detained. However, since she entered not guilty pleas, she was not required to give an explanation at that stage.
The police prosecutor had no objection to bail, and Magistrate Mohammed offered Castillo bail in the sum of $4,000, plus two sureties of $2,000 each. Castillo told the court she did not want bail and preferred to be remanded for two weeks, but bail was still granted with conditions.
As part of her bail conditions, Castillo must not contact or interfere with the complainants, their family members, or witnesses. She must also stay 100 feet away from all witnesses, report to the Precinct 1 Police Station on King Street once per week every Friday beginning June 12, 2026, and must not be arrested and charged with any other offense while out on bail.
After posting bail, Castillo told reporters that she was the victim in the incident. She claimed she had gone to a local shop when another woman arrived and accused her of pulling a knife. Castillo said she had a “bora” and pepper spray, but claimed they were for self-defense.
Castillo further alleged that while being detained, a female police officer stepped on her foot, while a male police officer choked her and dragged her by her breast. She said she intends to file a report against the officers.
Castillo also showed reporters a medical form from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she said she was treated and prescribed medication.
The case continues before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
