By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Honduran national who walked free from a murder charge this week has been deemed a prohibited immigrant and is now awaiting removal from Belize.
Angel Adolfo Garcia Alvarez, 23, was brought before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, one day after the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office entered a nolle prosequi in his murder case before the High Court.
Alvarez had been jointly charged with Santos Zepeda for the murder of 59-year-old Rosa Chinchilla, who was found dead inside her home at #34 Lindo’s Alley in Belize City on August 17, 2020.
The murder case against Alvarez ended on Monday, June 8, 2026, after the DPP’s office discontinued the proceedings against him. The move followed a ruling that certain evidence the prosecution had sought to rely on was inadmissible. Alvarez was therefore freed of the murder charge, though it was not an acquittal.
However, instead of being released, Alvarez was handed over to the Belize City Immigration Department. Immigration authorities say Alvarez entered Belize illegally on July 2, 2019, and he was deemed a prohibited immigrant under Section 5(1)(n) of the Immigration Act.
In court, Immigration officials did not seek a fine and instead requested that Alvarez be removed from the country. The court granted the removal order.
Alvarez remains at the Belize Central Prison pending his expulsion from Belize.
At the time he was charged in 2020, Alvarez had been living at #39 Cemetery Lane in Belize City. He has spent more than five years on remand.
In 2025, Alvarez and his co-accused, Santos Zepeda, reportedly escaped from lawful custody but were recaptured shortly after. Neither man was charged for escape.
The murder trial against Zepeda continues before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court.
