From US prison to a Belize comeback: Lova Boy speaks

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Recently deported Belizean artist Daniel “Lova Boy” Cacho has broken his silence, sitting down for his first interview since being sent home after serving time in a United States jail for robbery and other offenses, and it made for raw, emotional television.

Appearing on Uncut with Jules Vasquez, as aired on Channel 7, the artist did not run from his record. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in the US had labeled him among the “worst of the worst,” but Lova Boy insisted he has paid his debt and accepts what comes with it.

“If you talk about the crime, you know I didn’t get away with a crime. You do realize I went to prison? You do realize I pled guilty, I accepted responsibility,” he said. “The fact is I did my time, and I do understand that consequences go beyond prison time, and whatever that means for me, I am here to accept it. I am not lazy; I am ready and willing to do the work. I miss my people.”

The interview’s hardest moment came when Vasquez confronted the artist over public perception. Noting that at his peak with the hit “Tornado” he was hugely popular with children, with kids performing the song at school plays, the veteran journalist asked how the community could trust him again, given what he described as a nagging perception attached to a past accusation involving a minor, an accusation, Vasquez himself stressed, of which Lova Boy was found innocent.

“I can’t answer that,” the artist initially responded. Pressed on how he could bridge that gap, he settled on a philosophy of facts over rumours. “If I sit down here and answer about rumors and stuff like that, I could be here all night. All I have in my corner is the facts, and wherever the chips may land, that that there, the chips they fall.”

While Lova Boy did not walk out of the difficult sit-down, he did cry during the show, a measure of the weight of the homecoming he now faces, rebuilding a life and a music career in a country watching closely.

So Belize, the question his interview leaves behind: does everyone who serves their time deserve a second chance? Comment below.
