International News: Parts of England endure longest dry spell in 30 years as heatwave continues

By Zoila Palma:  Parts of England are experiencing their longest dry spell in three decades as an ongoing heatwave enters its second week. According to weather officials, central England has recorded no measurable rainfall for 15 consecutive days, the longest such dry period since June 1996. At the same time, several areas have remained under official heatwave conditions for 14 days, with temperatures consistently exceeding local thresholds.

Today, forecasters expected the UK’s highest temperature to surpass 30 degrees Celsius for the 13th consecutive day, marking the country’s longest streak of such temperatures since 2006.

Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire recorded 14 straight days above its heatwave threshold of 27 degrees Celsius. While the 1976 record of 16 consecutive days above 30 degrees appears unlikely to be broken, this year’s prolonged heat has already set several notable records, BBC reports.

Meteorologists say the unusually long and intense heatwave is being driven by a combination of climate change and persistent weather patterns. Average temperatures across the UK are now 1.33 degrees Celsius warmer than they were between 1961 and 1990, while the hottest days have warmed even more dramatically.

A slow-moving area of high pressure, combined with a northward-shifted jet stream, has created a “heat dome” that traps hot, dry air and prevents cloud formation, allowing the sun to further heat the ground.

The current heatwave is the UK’s third of 2026 and follows record-breaking temperatures in both May and June.

This year has also seen six days with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, and marks the first time the UK has recorded 35-degree temperatures in three consecutive months—May, June, and July.
