By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 35-year-old mechanic from Hattieville Village is a free man today after a serious charge of attempted murder against him was discontinued in the High Court.
Dorian Garnett, of Hattieville Village on the George Price Highway, had been accused of stabbing his own friend during an incident at the Fish Market area near Conch Shell Bay on November 1, 2024.
Garnett appeared before Justice Derick Sylvester in the High Court, where the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions entered a nolle prosequi, effectively ending the case against him. Crown Counsel Maria Nembhard-Santana informed the court that the Crown was discontinuing the matter after being unable to secure the cooperation of the virtual complainant.
With the case formally withdrawn, Justice Sylvester told Garnett he was free to go.
Outside court, Garnett’s attorney, Oscar Selgado, explained that the case came to an end because the complainant no longer wished to proceed.
According to Garnett, the allegations made against him were “fabricated.” He said he and the complainant were friends at the time of the alleged incident and remain friends today. Garnett added that the two men even spoke and shook hands earlier in the day, putting the matter behind them.
He said he harbored no ill feelings toward his friend and was relieved to finally have the serious charge lifted after it had hung over his head for more than a year.
Garnett, who had been out on bail since the incident, maintained that he was innocent from the beginning. When the matter was first called up in the High Court in 2025, he entered a plea of not guilty.
His attorney further noted that the defense believed Garnett had a strong chance of acquittal had the matter gone to trial, citing the absence of a medical report in the case file and only a medico-legal form that was reportedly completed months later in May 2025.
Speaking after the ruling, Garnett said he felt “great” to finally see the case concluded in his favor.
