By Zoila Palma: New surveillance footage from Pauls Valley High School shows the moment a school principal tackled and disarmed a gunman who entered the building and opened fire earlier this month.
Global News reports that the incident occurred on April 7 when a former student allegedly attempted to carry out a shooting but was stopped within seconds.
According to an arrest affidavit, 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins entered the school lobby shortly after 2 p.m. armed with a firearm and ordered people to get on the ground. He reportedly attempted to shoot a student, but the weapon malfunctioned, preventing immediate injury.
The footage shows principal Kirk Moore rushing into the hallway, tackling the suspect onto a bench and forcing the gun from his hand. Another staff member then secured the weapon and removed it from the scene. Moore, who restrained the suspect until help arrived, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Police said Hawkins allegedly brought two loaded semi-automatic pistols to the school, which he claimed to have taken from his father without permission.
He is being held in Garvin County on $1 million bail and faces multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill and carrying a weapon to a public assembly.
Investigators said he admitted he wanted to carry out a school shooting similar to the Columbine attackers and targeted Moore specifically.
