By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): For more than a decade, a dedicated group of dentists, surgeons, university faculty, and students from Minnesota have been quietly making a difference in Belize.

Every year since 2013, the team has traveled to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye to provide free dental care to residents who may otherwise struggle to access treatment.

What began as a small educational initiative has grown into a major outreach effort that now serves hundreds of patients annually.

This year alone, the volunteer team treated approximately 200 patients through clinics at Holy Cross Anglican School and the San Pedro Polyclinic. Services included fillings, extractions, infection treatment, and other dental procedures.

The impact extends beyond the clinics.

Volunteers also visit local schools, where they teach children about proper brushing and flossing techniques while providing fluoride treatments aimed at preventing tooth decay.

According to organizers, nearly 2,000 children benefit from the educational component of the program each year.

The mission was founded by Brigette Cooper of Minnesota State University, who wanted to create an international learning opportunity for dental hygiene students while addressing a community need in Belize.

Over the years, the annual trip has become a valued partnership between Belizean communities and healthcare professionals from the United States.

The volunteers say one of the most rewarding aspects of the mission is seeing familiar faces return year after year and witnessing improvements in oral health among local families.

For many residents of Ambergris Caye, the program has become an important source of dental care, education, and support.

Fourteen years after it began, the mission continues to prove that a simple act of service can leave a lasting impact on an entire community.
