By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Healthcare in western Belize has taken a major step forward following the successful completion of the first-ever laparoscopic surgery at the Western Regional Hospital.
The historic procedure was carried out on June 18 through a partnership between the hospital and Surgical Outreach for the Americas (SOFA), marking the introduction of a modern surgical technique that offers patients less pain, smaller incisions, and faster recovery times.
Laparoscopic surgery, often referred to as minimally invasive surgery, uses specialized instruments and a camera inserted through small incisions, allowing surgeons to perform procedures with greater precision while reducing trauma to the patient.
The milestone was achieved with the support of a volunteer medical team from the United States, including several experienced surgeons who traveled to Belize as part of a medical outreach mission.
Adding to the significance of the achievement, the team donated a laparoscopic tower valued at approximately $75,000 to the Western Regional Hospital. The equipment will allow local medical professionals to continue performing advanced procedures long after the mission team has departed.
The first procedure was led by General Surgeon Dr. Roni Zul of the Western Regional Hospital, who described the development as an important advancement for healthcare services in Belmopan and the wider western region.
Officials say the introduction of laparoscopic surgery will help reduce the need for some patients to travel abroad or seek specialized treatment elsewhere, allowing more Belizeans to access modern surgical care closer to home.
For patients in western Belize, the milestone represents more than a successful surgery. It represents expanded access to advanced medical care and a promising step toward the future of healthcare in the region.
