By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Constable David Roca, 26, of Belize City, is a free man after a common assault charge against him was withdrawn by the complainant, his common-law wife. Roca was accused of assaulting her on Friday, December 20, 2024.
During his arraignment, Roca initially pleaded guilty. However, after the facts of the case, based on the wife’s police report, were read in court, he disputed the account of events. According to her report, she noticed Roca’s shoes were not under the bed and called out for him. When he didn’t respond, she got out of bed, at which point Roca began questioning her about messages on her phone. An argument ensued, and she returned to her room. She claimed Roca then tried to leave, and when she stood by the door, a struggle ensued, during which he allegedly pushed her into the room. She then locked herself inside and heard dishes breaking. She later complained of back pain to the police.
Due to Roca’s disagreement with the facts presented, the Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf and granted him bail of $800 with conditions.
Later that day, the prosecutor informed the court that the woman wished to withdraw the charge. She testified in court, stating she did not want to proceed with the matter and requested no further court action. As a result, the charge against Roca was withdrawn, and he was released. The case had already been adjourned to January 20, 2025, and Roca was in the court’s detention area awaiting bail before the charge was dropped.
