By Zoila Palma:  Farmers from Indian Church and San Carlos in the Orange Walk District recently participated in the third field visit under an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) project targeting the diamondback moth, a pest that affects cabbage crops.

During the visit, farmers received hands-on training in pest identification, collected data from demonstration plots, and evaluated the effectiveness of different pest control methods. They also assessed and installed light and yellow sticky traps to monitor pest populations and help guide management decisions.

As part of the initiative, farmers received beneficial insects, including Trichogramma pretiosum and Chrysoperla carnea, along with guidance on their proper handling and evening release.

The activities were facilitated by Edwin Sosa, OIRSA Biological Control Project Coordinator, and Jesse Madrid, MAFSNGI Extension Officer, in collaboration with participating farmers.

The project promotes sustainable agricultural practices through regular crop monitoring and the use of beneficial insects to manage pests.
