By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize’s long awaited redistricting exercise will stretch into 2027, according to the Elections and Boundaries Commission.
In a statement, the Commission said it cannot set a timeline for completing the process until a review of proposed constitutional amendments is finished.
The Commission noted that its last redivision exercise was completed in 2023. A report recommending changes to electoral boundaries went to the National Assembly in July of that year, but those changes were never passed into law.
That exercise flagged constitutional issues with Sections 89 and 90, which deal with the number of electoral divisions and how voters are distributed among them. The Commission then asked the Attorney General’s Ministry to examine whether amendments are needed to clarify population distribution and the allowable variation between divisions.
That review has not yet been completed.
According to the Elections and Boundaries Department, Belize had 212,000 registered voters across its 31 electoral divisions as of September 2026.
The Commission says it is continuing to work on the legal and technical framework for a new exercise.
