By Zoila Palma: The European Union (EU) has marked a new milestone in its partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Government of Belize to strengthen regional integration, border management, and environmental conservation.

As part of the initiative, the EU is supporting upgrades to Belize’s Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS), alongside the development of shared guidelines to improve the consistent collection and use of border information by agencies.

The EU has also funded practical training for border officers and donated equipment, including off-road vehicles, handheld radios, and a signal repeater to enhance communication across southern Belize.

The equipment and technology support is valued at approximately $208,400, according to the EU in Belize.

In support of environmental conservation, three Belizean organizations—Ya’axché Conservation Trust, Friends for Conservation and Development, and the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management—have each been awarded EU-funded grants of approximately $316,000 to safeguard critical forests and protected areas.

The EU said the combined investment in border agencies, conservation organizations, and technology upgrades connects environmental protection with border security and community resilience, strengthening Belize’s capacity to respond to challenges along its borders and within protected areas.
