By Aaron Humes: A Police Constable and his estranged common-law wife found themselves in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning facing separate charges following a domestic dispute that escalated over the weekend.
The couple appeared unrepresented and were each arraigned on serious charges from incidents reported in December 2024 and January 2025. The police officer was charged with common assault, sexual assault, and theft, specifically for allegedly stealing $400 from his estranged partner. He pleaded not guilty to all counts.
His estranged common-law wife was arraigned on four charges: one count of damage to property for allegedly vandalizing a Honda Accord belonging to her partner, one count of wounding him, and two counts of theft related to the alleged thefts of two cellphones. She also pleaded not guilty to all charges.
This domestic dispute reportedly began in December and culminated in criminal charges filed by both parties. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, both expressed a desire to withdraw the charges against each other. The woman cited that they had “already worked it out” when asked by the court why she was retracting her complaint.
As a result of their joint request, the prosecutor offered no further evidence, leading to the charges being struck out due to want of prosecution. The couple, who had been in custody over the weekend pending the arraignment, were released following the court proceedings. They exited the courtroom together but went their separate ways.
