By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Premier League of Belize champions Port Layola are hoping to rise to the challenge and secure their first points of the CONCACAF Central American Cup when they face Club Deportivo Águila of El Salvador on Wednesday. The match will kick off at 4:00 pm at Estadio Las Delicias in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.

Port Layola conducted their pitch inspection at the Salvadoran stadium on Tuesday evening, and are now ready to take on their third opponent in the regional competition. The pitch or field insoection is when teams visit the stadium to familiarize themselves with the playing surface and conditions before the match. It’s normally done one day ahead of their match.

Tickets for the game cost US$5.00 general admission (Sol General Oriente and Preferente Sur) and $15 in their VIP section called Tribuna. Águila has set aside the Preferente Sur section for Port Layola fans. Gates opened at 12:30 pm.

Port are looking to turn their fortunes around on Wednesday, as their campaign has not started well. The Premier League of Belize champions suffered heavy defeats in their first two encounters at home, losing 4-1 to Guatemala’s Antigua GFC and 6-1 to Honduras’ Olimpia.

In other Group C action, Antigua defeated CA Independiente (CAI) 2-1 on Tuesday at the Pensativo Stadium in Antigua, Guatemala.

Currently, Port find themselves at the bottom of Group C without a point, having scored only two goals while conceding ten. After Wednesday’s match, Antigua lead the group with seven points from three games, followed by Olimpia with six points from two matches. Águila have one point from their single game so far. Like Port, CAI have no points from two outings, but their goal differential (-4) is better than Port’s (-8).

After the Águila match, Port will have one more game remaining. That match will have them travelling to Panama City to tackle CAI on Wednesday, August 21, at 4:00 pm at Estadio Rommel Fernández.

Port’s misfortune on the field has been compounded by a change at the helm. Coach Charlie Slusher departed after just one Central American Cup game to take on the role of Head Coach of the Belize Men’s National Team. Assistant Coach Julius Allen stepped in temporarily and is now overseeing his second international match before handing over to a new coach.
