By Zoila Palma: The Government of Canada has updated its travel advisory for Belize, warning travellers about rising violent crime and the state of emergency declared on October 31, 2026, in selected areas of Belize City, Belize District, and Cayo District.
The emergency measures apply to parts of Northside and Southside Belize City, areas of Ladyville, Cotton Tree and Unitedville in Cayo, as well as the Coastal Highway between La Democracia and Hope Creek.
The advisory noted that security forces operating under the state of emergency have expanded powers to restrict movement, conduct searches and seizures, and detain persons of interest.
The advisory alerted travellers to expect increased police and military presence, carry valid identification, anticipate possible transportation disruptions and follow instructions from local authorities.
The advisory also highlights concerns over gang-related violence, particularly in Southside Belize City, where armed confrontations between rival groups have been linked to illegal activities.
It warns that violent crime, including murders, armed robberies, burglaries and assaults, occurs throughout Belize, including in Belmopan and popular tourist destinations such as San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, Placencia, San Ignacio, Corozal and Seine Bight.
