By Zoila Palma:  Belize is participating in the 20th edition of Caribbean Week of Agriculture, being held in Trelawny, Jamaica, from September 27 to October 2, 2026, under the theme “The New Face of Caribbean Food Systems.”

The regional event brings together agriculture officials, technical experts, farmers and other stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen food security, agricultural production and trade across the Caribbean.

Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and New Growth Industries, Rodwell Ferguson, participated in a public forum with regional agriculture ministers on September 28 under the theme “Transforming Regional Food Systems: A Case for Accelerating Vision 25 by 2025 + 5.”

During his intervention, Ferguson highlighted the need for Caribbean countries to change attitudes toward locally produced goods and provide greater support for products made within the region.

Ferguson also called for improved transportation, marketing and shipping links between Caribbean countries to strengthen regional agricultural capacity. He said Belize is prepared to supply agricultural products to countries in the Caribbean and Central America, while greater regional cooperation could help address logistical challenges affecting trade.

His comments have also prompted responses from Jamaica’s local business community, with media outlets including the Gleaner and Observer reporting on the discussion.

This year’s Caribbean Week of Agriculture is focusing on food security, agri-business development, climate-smart technologies and export expansion.

Discussions are centered on increasing regional self-sufficiency, encouraging private-sector investment, promoting resilient farming practices, and addressing barriers to intra-regional trade and access to international markets.

More than 600 delegates representing approximately 36 to 40 countries are participating in the week’s activities, which include more than 70 technical and networking sessions.

The programme also features high-level ministerial meetings, exhibitions, a trade show, a Youth Village and regional awards, including the CARICOM Farmer and Young Farmer of the Year.

The event is being organized with support from the Caribbean Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (CARDI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and CARICOM.
