By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man has been fined $150 after police caught him smoking cannabis in public on Freetown Road earlier this week.
Thirty-seven-year-old Gilbert Jason Goodger, a caretaker and construction worker, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of smoking cannabis in a public place.
Police say that at around 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, an officer on mobile patrol along Freetown Road noticed Goodger standing in front of Li Chee Restaurant with a white cigarette-like object in his mouth.
According to police, the officer saw Goodger remove the object from his mouth and hand it to another man standing nearby. The officer reportedly detected the strong smell of marijuana and approached Goodger.
A search of Goodger reportedly yielded nothing incriminating. However, police said the cigarette-like object he had been seen smoking measured approximately one and a half inches.
Goodger, a first-time offender for the offence, pleaded guilty and was fined $150, plus $5 cost of court. He has until August 31, 2026, to pay the fine or face one week in prison.
