By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 34-year-old Belize City electrician was fined $1,000 after pleading guilty to possessing one gram of crack cocaine, which police say he concealed beneath his tongue.

Jerome Middleton, of Fairweather Street, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug.

Police reported that Middleton was detained at approximately 10:55 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, while officers were on Allenby Street. According to police, he initially refused to open his mouth, forcing officers to intervene. Two pieces of aluminium foil containing crack cocaine were reportedly found beneath his tongue.

Before sentencing, the magistrate asked Middleton whether it was his first drug conviction, and he reportedly said that it was. However, a check of court records revealed that he had previous drug convictions.

The magistrate noted that Middleton had not been truthful with the court and, after considering his criminal record, fined him $1,000 plus $5 in court costs.

Middleton has until October 31, 2026, to pay the fine or serve five months in prison in default of payment.
