By Zoila Palma: On July 15, 2026, through the Belize City Council’s Mayor for a Day Programme, Eldon Lewis gained first-hand knowledge of municipal leadership, public administration, community engagement and civic responsibility; important skills that strengthened his pathway toward becoming work-life ready.
The initiative was done in observation of World Skills Day 2026.
By shadowing Mayor Bernard Wagner, engaging with Council staff and participating in the work of local government, young people like Eldon are allowed to understand better how public service can be used to improve communities and create meaningful change.
“Today, for an entire generation of young people, mentorship, training and transformation must go even further.
That is why the Belize City Council supports @Generation Unlimited at @UNICEF so every young person can access the guidance, experience and opportunities needed to shape their own future and lead solutions for today’s world,” the council said.
The council urged everyone to invest in mentorship pathways that prepare young people for leadership, meaningful livelihoods and a life of dedicated public service.
